Nose Rhinoplasty

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to eliminate or reshape the health problems related to the nose. Nose surgery can be performed to correct a structural problem related to the nose or for aesthetic reasons.

A rhinoplasty surgery can eliminate many physical problems related to the nose. Especially breathing difficulties, birth defects, nasal injuries, damage due to cancer or an infection may require rhinoplasty and plastic surgery. Rhinoplasty surgery is also performed for aesthetic reasons such as correcting an arched nose, narrowing the tip of the nose, raising the nasal tip, correcting the internal and external curvature of the nose, correcting the width and asymmetry of the nasal base, or doing all these works within the same surgery.

Why is Rhinoplasty Surgery Performed?

- Cosmetic Reasons

Most of the people who are not satisfied with the appearance of their nose complain about the bridge of the nose or the tip of the nose. In addition, many people describe their nose as very wide, round, arched or misshapen. Some people also don't like the length of their noses.

- Medical Reasons

A nose surgery may be preferred because of injury to the nose. Sometimes, there may be breathing problems related to the airways of the nose. In these cases, surgical applications are considered to be the reconstruction of the nose, while most of the rhinoplasty operations are classified as aesthetic.

Rhinoplasty is usually performed for:

  • Correcting the protrusion on the bridge of the nose,
  • Reshaping the tip of the nose,
  • Changing the nose length
  • Changing/narrowing the width of the nose,
  • Changing the width of the nostrils / correcting their asymmetry,
  • To provide reconstruction and repositioning of the nose after injury,
  • Opening the nasal airways to aid breathing.

If You Are Considering Having Surgery...

You have to decide whether you really need rhinoplasty. People have different opinions about the 'ideal nose shape'. The aesthetic understanding of the nose may show racial, regional and regional differences. There are structural differences between men and women between the understanding of aesthetics and beauty, and these issues should be taken into account in rhinoplasty surgeries. Therefore, you should not consider having surgery because of pressure from anyone.

A rhinoplasty surgery may be needed to improve your nasal health. However, if you are considering surgery for aesthetic reasons, you should also make sure that your expectations are realistic.

If you lack self-confidence or have a deformity in your nose, rhinoplasty surgery can help. However, sometimes the results of the surgery may be unsuccessful and more than one operation may be required. If you are considering a purely cosmetic rhinoplasty for a child, experts recommend waiting until your child's nose is fully developed. This is age 17 for girls and 18 for boys.

How is Rhinoplasty Surgery Performed?

There are many different methods in rhinoplasty surgeries. Therefore, you should discuss with your doctor what he is planning. Although the surgery is sometimes performed with local anesthesia, it is usually performed under general anesthesia. Nose surgeries are performed with closed or open technique. With the closed technique, the operation is completed by making internal mucosal incisions in the middle and sides of the nose and without incisions from the outside. The inner sutures dissolve on their own and do not need to be removed. In the open rhinoplasty technique, the operation is performed with an external incision in the middle of the nose and its inward extension. Stitches are removed approximately 5-7 days after surgery.

During the operation, your doctor will make a small incision inside your nostrils. From there, he can cut bone and cartilage to reshape your nose. If more cartilage is needed to reshape the nose, ear cartilage can be taken from other parts of the body, such as the ribs. After the tissue on the cartilage is replaced, the incision is sutured. Bandages wrapped around the nose are usually removed 7-10 days after the operation. Depending on the intraoperative situation, silicone stents and removable sponges can be placed in the nose. In very heavy bleeding, tampons are placed, but they are used very rarely.

Risks of Rhinoplasty

As in all surgical operations, there are some risks associated with the surgical operation in rhinoplasty surgery. These are the risks associated with bleeding, infection and anesthesia. Apart from these, the risks of a rhinoplasty surgery are listed as follows:

  • excessive nosebleeds,
  • An infection that may require antibiotic treatment or a new surgery,
  • Severe and ongoing pain
  • Persistent numbness around the nose,
  • Decreased sense of smell (occurs in rare cases),
  • Thick and abnormal scars,
  • Shortness of breath due to narrowing of the airways,
  • Swelling on the tip and edge of the nose that does not go away or decrease for a long time,
  • Postoperative deformity and dissatisfaction with the new appearance,
  • The need for a second surgery afterwards.

Rhinoplasty Surgery Cost

The cost of rhinoplasty surgery; The person's expectations will vary according to the procedure to be performed.
