What is Liposuction? 

Liposuction is a popular application used to remove excess fat in certain parts of the body, such as the abdomen, waist, hips, legs, back, arms or neck areas. Liposuction also helps to shape these areas and improve their contours. Liposuction is not a general weight loss method.

If you are overweight, you can lose more weight by dieting and exercising, or by opting for bariatric surgery such as sleeve gastrectomy. If you have excess fat in certain parts of your body and have a generally stable weight, you may be a suitable candidate for liposuction.

Why is Liposuction Done?

Liposuction is applied to areas of the body that do not respond to the combination of diet and exercise. These regions;

• Legs
• Ankles,
• Chest and Back,
• Neck,
• Sometimes it can also be used for breast reduction in men. It can also be used in addition to reduction surgery in women.

When you gain weight, the volume and size of the fat cells in your body also expand. Liposuction application helps to reduce the number of fat cells in the area with excess fat. The amount of fat taken depends on the appearance or volume of the area where the application is made. The results and the resulting contour change in these applications are usually permanent as long as your weight remains stable.

If you have a good skin tone and elasticity, your skin will look smooth. If you have skin that has lost its elasticity, the skin in the liposuction area may become loose. These treatments do not improve cellulite or other skin surface irregularities such as stretch marks.

Who Cannot Perform Liposuction?

Are There Risks of Having Liposuction?

In liposuction, as in any surgical procedure, there are risks such as bleeding and anesthesia reaction. Possible risks specific to the application are as follows:

• Contour Irregularities: Depending on reasons such as incorrect applications, loss of elasticity of the skin, fluctuations and stains may occur on your skin as a result of the application, or it may look faded. These changes may be temporary or permanent.
• Edema: There may be temporary fluid accumulations under the skin surface. If not, these accumulated liquids may need to be drained.
• Numbness: There may be permanent or temporary loss of sensation in the area where liposuction is applied. It is also possible that this was due to temporary nerve irritation.
• Infection: Infection of the skin is extremely rare, but possible.
• Bruises on the skin: There may be small bruises in the places where oil is taken from. Some dark spots due to these may last a few moments.
• Fat Embolism: Pieces of fat can get stuck in a blood vessel and collect in the lungs and travel to the brain. This is a medical condition that requires immediate attention.

Post Liposuction Process

After liposuction, swelling, bruising and pain may be seen in the application area. After the application, you may need to rest for a few days before returning to work. It is recommended that you wait a few weeks to return to your daily activities, including exercise.

Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection. In addition, in a few weeks after liposuction; You may need to wear tight special corsets and clothing to help reduce swelling. In this process, there may be some contour irregularities in the areas where fat is removed, these are usually temporary.

The swelling will subside spontaneously within 3-6 weeks. During this period, the contour will gradually come to the desired shape and reduced volume in the areas where fat is removed. Not immediately, but a few months after the surgery, the liposuction area should look better.
