Eyelid Aesthetics Application
Eyelid aesthetics is the surgical removal of excess eyelid skin in some people to look younger and livelier. The procedure can reduce excess skin, relaxed muscles, and sometimes excess fat (bags) on the lower and upper eyelids.
Eyelid aesthetics is a procedure that is generally applied to correct the sagging skin on the edges of the eyelid and to increase the flattening on the sides.
The application plays a vital role in rejuvenating the face, as it establishes a direct aesthetic relationship with the eyebrows and cheeks. In the physical examination before the procedure, the position of the eyebrows and eyelids and their proportion to the cheeks should be considered.
Who is Suitable for Eyelid Aesthetics?
If you are not sure whether you are a suitable candidate for eyelid aesthetics, you should make an appointment with our aesthetic and plastic surgeon to find out if there are any medical problems with your eyelid. If you don't have any medical reasons preventing the procedure from being performed, you can talk to our plastic surgeon about your concerns about cosmetic eyelid surgery.
Eyelid aesthetics can be considered due to excessive sagging around the eyes, due to the normal aging process. In addition, eyelid aesthetics can be performed due to eye allergies or sagging due to edema.
If you are interested in this operation for cosmetic reasons, it is important to keep your expectations realistic. Aesthetic treatments are not an elixir of youth, although they can sometimes dramatically improve appearance.
The aging process will continue after the operation and, as in all other aesthetic operations, your youthful appearance resulting from an eyelid aesthetic will not last forever. But later, you might consider repeating the procedure. However, depending on your health and other factors, the effect of eyelid aesthetics can last up to 10 years.
Our doctor will also evaluate possible surgical risk factors such as dry eye, thyroid disease, or diabetes. The severity and number of any health problems may make you not a suitable candidate for eyelid aesthetics. If you smoke, the risk of surgical complications is increased because wounds heal more slowly in smokers. In some patients with goiter, a more protruding eye may complicate or prevent surgery.
Preparation for Eyelid Aesthetics
The application of local or general anesthesia for eyelid aesthetics is decided before the procedure. Generally, local anesthesia is sufficient for eyelid aesthetic procedures. If too much stress or other psychological factors are dominant, it can also be done with intravenous (intravenous) anesthesia.
If local anesthesia will be used, you will remain awake during the procedure, but the eyelid skin and surrounding area will be numbed with a very fine needle. This process does not cause any damage to your eye muscles and nerves. If general anesthesia is required, an anesthetic will be administered for 20 or 120 minutes after surgery.
Before the day of the aesthetic operation and especially if general anesthesia will be applied, you may be asked to pay attention to the following:
- If your doctor recommends, do not take any medication that will increase your risk of bleeding or prevent blood clots. These drugs include aspirin and pain relievers with blood thinning effects. To reduce the risk of excessive bleeding during the operation, you should stop taking these drugs 1-2 weeks before.
- In the evening before the surgery, choose a light meal such as soup. Do not eat or drink anything after midnight.
- On the morning of the operation, if there is an essential medicine that you need to take, you can take these medicines with a sip of water.
- Do not apply any makeup on the day of surgery.
How is Eyelid Aesthetics Performed?
Eyelid aesthetics can be performed only on the lower or upper eyelids, or both at the same time. During the operation, horizontal incisions are made in the fold of the upper eyelid and 5 mm below the eyelashes in the lower eyelid. After the incisions have healed, the scars will be quite difficult to notice. During eyelid aesthetics, your doctor makes markings with a skin pen at the places where the incision will be made to determine the areas where excess skin and fat tissues should be removed. During the procedure, if there are sagging in the outer eye muscle below, thin slices can be removed from some muscles.
Patients with dry eyes often require less tissue to be removed to prevent the problem from worsening, which can cause worsening of symptoms. Your doctor may also use a CO2 laser to smooth any remaining wrinkles in the eyelid area. If the eyebrows are also drooping, a procedure to raise the eyebrows may also be appropriate. This application, called eyebrow lift, raises the eyebrows and tightens the skin by making an incision in the eyebrow. One of the eyebrow lifting methods is to hang the eyebrows up with the ropes that are advanced from the small holes in the scalp. These threads can be surgical threads, as well as custom-made cone or serrated threads. These additional eyebrow lifting procedures can also be performed under local anesthesia.
